Sleep Tackle

"The RATTATA, not the GROUND!"

My fellow pokémon artist and friendly neighborhood nemesis Justin Hall recently launched his own site to host his comic strips in a more comfortable fashion, and thus I felt compelled to give it some attention in the only way I can. His Sleep Tackle is one of my own personal favorites, but seeing as it's one of his earlier productions, I concluded that it was in need of some treatment. This would be a great opportunity to work in my site name, but I won't.

JHall's strips and jokes are similar to mine in the sense that he's not afraid to mix multiple genres or references, and also take a realistic approach to the pokémon world and all of its whimsical laws and mechanics. You may have already seen his Dragonite and Poison strips, so that should be reason enough to visit!

Enjoy my convenient excuse for not spending one of my own ideas for an update, see you for x weeks!

That's hilarious. I've always wondered why only a handful of moves have damage if you miss.

October 20th, 2011, 3:15 pm

funny ironic things is after i read this while playing black version this happened after i said it wouldnever happen...*Facepalm*

October 20th, 2011, 3:16 pm

I always wondered.

I personally find it more funny when you've spammed Double Team before getting put to sleep, and you manage to evade the attack.

Evade. While asleep.

Pokemon clearly laughs at logic.

October 20th, 2011, 3:17 pm

There is always an excuse when they are sleeping, as they could of just rolled over to get comfortable, but when they are FROZEN... How do you miss a frozen Snorlax?

October 20th, 2011, 3:51 pm

I checked out the comic you mentioned in the author comment.
Needless to say I won't be running out of nightmare fuel anytime soon :P

October 20th, 2011, 6:31 pm

Butterfree, I'm sorry but... You just won an EPIC FAIL award just then.

... ... ...

But the comic and the artist get and Epic Win. ^_^

October 20th, 2011, 8:03 pm

LOL this is great.

October 20th, 2011, 9:06 pm

i've always wondered if the powder made them sleep if the user then used a physical attck ho come they don't get affected

October 20th, 2011, 11:02 pm

Someone should post this under Epic Fail on tvtropes.

October 21st, 2011, 8:28 am

October 22nd, 2011, 3:01 am

I always pictured the sleeping pokemon rolling over in it's sleep and the attacking pokemon nosediving in the ground. lol But this is just more amusing.

October 24th, 2011, 12:03 pm

I just can't stop laught XD eaAEHhhue

October 24th, 2011, 1:34 pm

Great comic.

October 24th, 2011, 4:32 pm

@Red Spearow: Except that would require going ON TVTropes, which is like being Rickrolled all day.

In other news, LOL

October 27th, 2011, 4:25 pm

I really like your comics more :/ This other guys' just dont seem to have the same witty flare. . .

With that being said, this is hilarious XD and so true. and so annoying. why does this happen!?

October 28th, 2011, 11:46 am

Butterfree has Compoundeyes, so Tackle will never miss.

October 28th, 2011, 2:27 pm

Not all Butterfree have Compoundeyes

October 29th, 2011, 12:14 am

@tyler: So this guy has a Dream World Butterfree? >.<

October 29th, 2011, 11:56 pm

Tackle has 100% acc in B/W.

October 30th, 2011, 7:43 am

@Guest : well that is clearly red

October 31st, 2011, 1:26 pm

Funny but outdated...

This is indeed funny and reminds me of all post B&W Pokemon games. For in black and white Tackle now has a 100% accuracy, instead of a 95% accuracy. But still funny and painful to remember all those times of tackle missing.

November 1st, 2011, 4:07 am

100 Accuracy can still miss >>

November 4th, 2011, 1:29 pm

@Gard: Only if the enemy used Sand-Attack, Double Team, is equipped with a Bright Powder, you have your pokemon equipped with an item that lowers its accuracy, or your pokemon has an ability that lowers its accuracy. Otherwise, no, 100% accuracy cannot miss. And the way the comic is going, it suggests that Sand-Attack/Double Team/Items/Abilities are not being used, thus the miss was just dumb luck.

November 5th, 2011, 1:38 pm

@Michael: actually 100% accuracy moves can miss. their accuracy is actually 99.99%. It's happened to me in the games in the absence of those specific items, moves in play, and abilities.

November 5th, 2011, 2:03 pm

@tyler: At this point, I'll put it this way, I have never had a move with 100% accuracy miss without the use of moves, items, or abilities that lower accuracy. For example, what move, on what pokemon was it that you missed with?

November 6th, 2011, 1:48 pm

@tyler: I think you're referring to Gen 1 when every move had a 1/256 chance of doing nothing (e.g. a 100% accurate move would actually be ~99.6% accurate, a 85% accurate move would actually be ~84.7% accurate, etc.).

I guess this could be RBY when the 1/256 chance existed or before Butterfree had Compoundeyes (also applies to GSC) or maybe Rattata used Mud Slap or Double Team...

November 6th, 2011, 7:07 pm

loved the comic i have a feeling i know alex hmmmmmm...

November 7th, 2011, 9:57 am

The trainer and the pokémon involved are based on the RBY games, so during that time, Tackle could indeed miss. It doesn't in Black/White. And this being a homage strip, substituting Butterfree with something else was out of the question.

All of my strips can at some points be broken down by explanations and real facts, but that's also why they're funny to begin with.

November 7th, 2011, 12:34 pm

@Bumbazzle: lol, true true. Reason why I stated that its outdated but still funny.

November 7th, 2011, 8:37 pm

hilarious and true

November 8th, 2011, 1:22 pm

@AxelThePokegodTrainer: Actually, in the games, this can't happen anymore. Only in the first two generations could this happen, assuming that the Rattata is wild. In Generation III, Butterfree got the CompoundEyes ability, meaning that if its Accuracy or the foe's evasion was not altered, Tackle was 100% accurate. Then, in Generation V, Tackle itself became 100% accurate. And Rattata can't naturally learn Double Team or Sand-Attack. The only way this could have happened is if the trainer had a Manaphy or Smeargle use Double Team a few times and Heart Swap the evasion boosts to Rattata beforehand.

November 25th, 2011, 2:07 pm

Am I the only one here that knows that CompoundEyes only negates the REDUCTION of accuracy. Therefore, anytime before Gen V, this could happen.

November 28th, 2011, 4:24 pm

One time, my Lilligant do that with a Sigilyph, only the thing-with-a-super-complicated-name AVOIDED the attack. Three times. After that, it wake up and keep avoiding the attack, but that is not as strange as when it was asleep

(Sorry my terrible english, i´m from Argentina)

December 14th, 2011, 10:16 pm

that is sooooooooooo funny, that always happens to me and I'm like WHAT THE HECK! its sleeping how'd you miss!!!

December 19th, 2011, 1:39 am

wow sucks for butterfree... BUTTERFREE'S FUTURE...... failure

January 25th, 2012, 6:00 pm

It may be late to post a comment on this one, but the same thing happened to me in FE8 a.k.a. FESS. Colm was sleeping, and yet he dodged a LANCE for gods sake. Colm be epic, unlike the Butterfree, who deserved beating by sticks and death by fire.

June 9th, 2012, 9:41 pm

@akamaru1414: You're thinking of Keen Eye. Compoundeyes makes all moves known by the user more accurate, meaning it would've bumped Tackle's accuracy up to 100%.

December 10th, 2012, 11:28 pm

Butterfree would have been able to attack after or Rattata would have woken up. Besides, all the coments are about if the comic is right or not.

April 13th, 2013, 12:35 pm

Rattata looks so cute while sleeping...
