March 14th, 2012, 4:28 pm

There are times when I realise that owning a pokémon webcomic actually demands me to draw pokémon and not just humans. Ditto gets to appear in another strip, otherwise I try to draw as many different species as possible. All of these strips are ideas which I felt didn't entirely merit an update individually, but combined, that should be reason enough.

First: Matter, or energy, cannot be created or destroyed. Ditto can transform, but that doesn't necessarily mean he can alter his size. IT'S A SCIENCE JOKE

Second: Earthquake is often used by rock, ground, steel and heavy pokémon. Pineco is a bug which weighs 15 lbs / 7 kg. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of doubt.

Third: Sucker punch is more of a term rather than an actual punch, referring to a hit without warning which may or may not be unfair. But since Electrode is a perfect sphere, it still sounds ludicrous. Seriously, the guy has no limbs.

Come on.

March 14th, 2012, 4:33 pm

Lol at all.

March 14th, 2012, 4:41 pm

XD This reminds me of me when I always wonder how Dugtrio can use Sucker Punch.

March 14th, 2012, 4:43 pm

xD Some moves just don't make sense. I lol'd.

March 14th, 2012, 4:44 pm

I feel so nerdy for laughing at the Ditto joke the hardest. Then smiled because I actually GOT it.

March 14th, 2012, 4:44 pm

@Ackirby: Another fine candidate.

March 14th, 2012, 4:48 pm

Just fill the ditto with air. Viola.

March 14th, 2012, 4:50 pm

About Ditto

I get it it can't change its mass, but what about changing its size by making itself empty on the inside - like a sophisticated baloon? Wouldn't seem very effective in combat, but makes sense to me.
Great comics, though. All of them.

March 14th, 2012, 5:15 pm

A bit like digletts being able to learn slash, or aerial ace. I mean they don't even have known limbs, but they can use flying moves?

March 14th, 2012, 5:37 pm

@Ackirby: He can also use arial ace :D

March 14th, 2012, 5:44 pm

Wow. I can't help but think, "Sure, Ditto can't increase its mass...but there's no reason it couldn't increase its size, it would just have to weigh less. It could be a colossal Banette, if it didn't mind the fact that it would blow away with a stiff breeze."

March 14th, 2012, 6:13 pm

...hahahaha...I love your webcomic!

March 14th, 2012, 6:30 pm

The expression on the electrode in the last panel is classic. "Yes, I'll use a sucker pun- oh..."

March 14th, 2012, 6:36 pm

Heh, I love the hidden joke in the third story more than your actual intent: The trainer telling Electrode to "hit the enemy without warning", loud and for everyone to hear :D

March 14th, 2012, 7:31 pm

Just like how the 1212.5 pound Metagross can execute an Aerial Ace.

March 14th, 2012, 7:44 pm

@Ackirby: Oh Dugtrio could easily pull off a Sucker Punch! Dugtrio could go underground, tunnel under the target, and then resurfacing quickly - hitting the victim in gut or in a sensitive lower region.

March 14th, 2012, 7:44 pm

Sucker Punch can easily be explained though. The Japanese name of the move can be translated into "Surprise Attack".

March 14th, 2012, 9:32 pm

If Ditto does not change size when transforming, i'd love to see a Ditto-sized Wailord XD

March 14th, 2012, 11:09 pm

I would like to point out that if we accept pokémon can store massive amounts of energy and release it as fire, electricity, a hyper beam, etc. then we must concede Ditto can convert *its* potential energy into mass.

But I love your comics. Just felt like I had to jump in on that one, aha

March 14th, 2012, 11:31 pm

it actually makes sense.

@Zjyslav: Well, since ditto can't change it's HP stat when it uses Transform, filling itself with air would make the most sense for practical reasons. (although, if it transforms into a Wailord, that's going a little extreme.)

March 15th, 2012, 2:17 am

@Ackirby: except that we have no idea what it looks like underground, so who knows

also there's an episode with a ditto like that back in the first season, i think.

March 15th, 2012, 8:35 am

You raise some good points. There are some serious holes in the poke-world's logic :P.

March 15th, 2012, 9:02 am

Hahaha dat electrodes facials! xD poor thing

March 15th, 2012, 11:56 am

@Istanbul: Actually, Ditto's weight would stay the same, since weight is a measure of mass. What would change is its density (mass/volume). I think you meant that it would weigh less, if we consider a fixed volume.

I prefer this alternative to the one saying that Ditto fills himself with air. One could simply insert a straw inside Ditto and start sucking the air out of him.

LOVE the comic, btw !

March 15th, 2012, 1:06 pm

The first tiles would have been funnier if you had used a larger pokemon, like Slaking or Snorlax

March 15th, 2012, 2:40 pm

March 15th, 2012, 3:07 pm

A science joke?!

I had to stare at the first one for a while. I kept thinking "it's a conservation of mass joke", and then "but nobody does science jokes."

March 15th, 2012, 6:43 pm

I assumed the ditto was a reference to the Ditto in the anime that had trouble changing its size during transformations.

March 15th, 2012, 7:08 pm

March 15th, 2012, 8:58 pm

You know...

There was another example you could've used for the whole "punch" thing that would've made more sense. Torchic can learn Mega Punch in FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald. Still funny stuff, though!

March 15th, 2012, 9:05 pm

Doduo :I

The same can be said about Doduo and Dotrio being able to Fly without wings >> IMMA KICK MY FEET REALLY HARD AND FLY IN THE AIR!

March 15th, 2012, 11:23 pm

Ditto cannot create matter or energy, but The Banach–Tarski paradox states that if there's a solid object in 3‑dimensional space, there exists a decomposition of the object into a finite number of non-overlapping pieces, which can then be put back together in a different way to yield two identical copies of the original object or that given any two "reasonable" solid objects (such as a ditto and a banette), either one can be reassembled into the other. The reassembly process involves only moving the pieces around and rotating them, without changing their shape. This is often stated colloquially as "a pea can be chopped up and reassembled into the Sun". So yeah.

March 16th, 2012, 12:14 am

That's just a possible explanation of how Ditto's power works. I propose Ditto can "create" matter by changing the form of its potential energy. Obviously with a loss of heat as thermodynamics dictates.

March 16th, 2012, 9:23 am

Wasn't it you who drew a diglett learning Aerial Ace?

March 16th, 2012, 9:42 am

Nerd's Comments

Dugtrio can learn Sucker Punch because you don't see his punch coming. Just because you can't see his arms doesn't mean they aren't there.

Metagross can use Magnet Rise to fly, which explains Aerial Ace.

No word on how Dugtrio can get Aerial Ace, though.

March 16th, 2012, 9:59 pm

Ditto:...............Stupid science.
Pineco: This is why I should get brownies.
Electrode: Damn you Arceus! Damn you!

March 17th, 2012, 3:52 am

@Ackirby: you never know what he's hiding underground...

March 17th, 2012, 9:05 am

@Istanbul: I thought EXACTLY the same thing! =P =D

March 17th, 2012, 9:31 am

I confused

@Hiramsthoughts: I am only in 6th grade, so can you explain that in stupid person speak (or at least not high school AP science speak)? I be cunfuzzled by that comment.

March 17th, 2012, 8:25 pm

impoternt idea!

make a comic of how pokemon battles are like the hunger games

March 18th, 2012, 7:54 am

there is acsuly a problem with this because he made a comic with a ditto discized as a human so unless the human was a midet of the ditto fat it would not work

March 18th, 2012, 11:45 am

@Toxic_Creed: Helicopter. With their heads.

Nuff said.

March 18th, 2012, 3:48 pm

Guest#2: Same species, different joke. A large majority of my strips are bending the rules of what's possible or not in the games, but none of them are coherent. If this webcomic had an actual plot to follow, then the last strip would have to be in line with all strips before it. But there is no plot here.

March 18th, 2012, 9:59 pm

There should be a Dexbusters episode explaining what a Diglett or Dugtrio looks like underground XD
And how a Ditto can transform into Wailord and other such pokemon.

March 19th, 2012, 9:30 am

On the subject of diglett, what does the whole pokemon look like? Any funny ideas? Id be glad to see

March 19th, 2012, 5:04 pm

If I were Ditto

Ditto can transform into any pokemon,so if I were ditto, I'd transform into diglett, look at my underground body, transorm into a psychic/telechenetic pokemon (kadabra/alakazam) and tell everyone what I look like underground. But if ditto can only tranform into what it knows, can it tranform into diglett since no one or nothing (including ditto) knows what the underside of a diglett looks like? do digletts bodies ever end?

March 19th, 2012, 6:41 pm

@Ackirby: His heads

March 20th, 2012, 2:51 am

Oh, there are so many dexes that need to be busted. Like how does Articuno fly if its wings are supposedly solid ice and thus to heavy for flight with no mobility? How does Porygon, who is supposedly made of 0s and 1s, exist physically? Can Regice really survive a lava bath? etc etc etc. I would love to see a lot more dex buster comics; there could almost be one for every pokemon.

March 20th, 2012, 9:00 pm

The Japanese name for Sucker Punch makes perfect sense for Electrode when you consider that Trainers will invariably pick it up thinking that it's an Item Ball.

March 20th, 2012, 9:03 pm

@Guest: I must say, that is a pretty good point there. I never really thought of the idea of Electrode knowing 'Surprise Attack' for that reason.

March 22nd, 2012, 3:15 pm

I see a trope here..

These Pokémon are Blessed With Suck. XD

March 23rd, 2012, 8:57 pm

@Guest#1: Why is it that everyone is so obsessed with Hunger Games? It's just a good book. It's not like everyone is obsessed with Pendragon or Gregor the Overlander or stuff that hold their own with Hunger Games. Besides, Suzanne Collins totally cheats with the whole gift idea.

March 23rd, 2012, 11:15 pm

@Toxic_Creed: Don't knock it, in the anime I've seen them spin their heads REALLY FAST to fly. It's hilarious. XD

March 24th, 2012, 4:13 pm

@Hiramsthoughts: Also, how is it possible that you can chop up a pea and reassmble it into the sun. The sun is millions of times larger then earth, and earth is septillions of times larger then a pea.(At least, I think. I'm only trying to make a point.)

March 24th, 2012, 4:15 pm

@Hiramsthoughts: Oh. I think I get it. You can chop up a box a bunch of times and put the atom sized pieces to get a globe. Am I right? I still don't get the pea sun thing, though. There are only so many atoms that can be rearranged.

March 25th, 2012, 2:14 pm

@Gamining King:

If you dice any object into infinitely small slices, it stands to reason you can obtain an infinite number of pieces.with those infinite pieces, you could reconstruct any shape, regardless of size of component, assuming the pieces removed were sufficiently small to construct such components. this is a difficult to reason on a quantum scale for matter, but it an argument supporting the relative largeness of infinites.

If Ditto has been using such a method to transform, it is likely that its opponents, though they may win the match, have lost the war due to incomprehensible radiation poisoning.

March 25th, 2012, 3:41 pm

@Guest#3: I still don't see how you can take a certain, limited number of items and saying it can be made bigger. That's just like saying you have two chocolate bars, and if you cut them small enough, you can get three chocolate bars. It doesn't make much sense. I can see how you can cut something up into infinitely small pieces if you ignore fact that anything smaller than 0.00000000000000000000000000000000001 meters makes no physical sense, but you can't take that infinite number of pieces and assemble them into something bigger. The pieces can only take up a certain area of space, even if it is an infinite amount, it is still confined into a small area and cannot be made bigger unless hollowed. With that reasoning, Bumbazzle is right, because according to the laws of science, you cannot make something out of nothing. Therefore, the wailord will be there, but transparent to invisible because it is so hollow.

March 25th, 2012, 5:09 pm

@Gamining King:

with an infinite amount of anything, regardless of the size, I can construct anything of any size. Be it subatomic, microscopic, macroscopic, the entire universe, or even something beyond, all of these can be constructed with access to infinite material. This is because, while not all infinites are equal, all compose a limitless, inexhaustible supply.

If I could cut a pea, or Sol, or an atom,or a galaxy into infinite components, I could construct anything of any size because I had a limitless number of pieces. Both of these capabilities are completely hypothetical, however, due to the impossibility of of the proposition. Matter, as we understand it, is composed of finite pieces which denature ata certain scale. It is physically impossible.

Likewise, as I can fractionate one unit an infinite number of times to create pieces infinitely small, indeed all those components together should be equal to one unit when reassembled.

These are the physical and mathematical truths you are siting and they are sound, but let us do a thought experiment:

Take a pea and take Sol, our yellow giant sun. Sol is much, much larger than a pea, such that a pea is negligible to Sol's mass and volume for any practical application.

Let us cut each in half. again, the fractions are incomparable. Let us do this again... and again and again and again. Each time we divide, the parts, while still incomparable through much of the process, eventually begin to approach each other in size. Amazingly, far, far down the line, the masses and volume of each body, pea and sun, become closer and closer until, still far from the infinite components feasibly possible to create, they are practically equivalent. Indeed, at the point the masses are essentially equal, it seems quite reasonable to assume the parts could be reassembled into each opposite body, if on no other principle than mass.

You could do the same with chocolate bars, or anything else for that matter.

March 26th, 2012, 4:01 pm

@Guest: It seems you have fallen for one of Zeno's paradoxes (the dichotomy paradox in particular). If you had taken any calculus course, you would know there are many infinite sums (that is, the addition of infinite terms) that have a finite value (these are called convergent series). For example, 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + ...forever... = 2, not infinity even though it is made up of infinite terms.

I'm not usually one to get involved in these things, but as a Math major, I feel as though you must be corrected!

March 26th, 2012, 5:00 pm

I agree with the other Guest (not that I have a choice); I was going to reply to this earlier, but I didn't want to get caught lollygagging at work...

Another way you can look at this is by dividing the sun into halves until you have X number of approximately pea sized pieces. Let's say this number is 1 million which, let's face it, it being unreasonably and unjustifiably generous.

Even though this is in no way a rigorous proof, at this point, reason should tell you that if the sun can be broken into 1 million peas, there's no way 1 pea can give you back the sun no matter how many times you split it.

Or you can just try dividing any number into as many pieces as you like, and adding them all back up. See if you can get anything other than what you started with. Same concept.

It has nothing to do with matter being finite; it has to do with the limits of infinite sums containing decreasing or infinitesimal terms.

Like the other person said: read up on Zeno's paradoxes.

March 26th, 2012, 5:54 pm

LOL. Gonna admit, didn't actually read the earlier comments. Now I'm learning some abstract algebra to understand the Banach-Tarski paradox. I'm not sure what to believe anymore...

Also, since I didn't mention it in then last thing, thanks for the update Bumbazzle!

March 26th, 2012, 10:28 pm

@Toxic_Creed: it could be flapping it's heads like wings. my favorite is how golurk can fly

March 26th, 2012, 11:19 pm

@Marisa Mockery: XD I know when I played in Stadium if I recall they used their legs to kick and fly into the air. It's still an amusing thought non-the-less seeing as they can fly without wings :U

@pkrsisfatal: Golurk is a giant robot >3> That was proven in the Reshiram/Zekrom movie. Still doesn't mean I'm not disappointed that this giant thing can learn fly where as Druddigon who clearly has wings cannot fly :(

March 27th, 2012, 6:46 pm

While I do think the theory is interesting, I did not support it, merely described it. Above the paradox I describe the mathematical and physical truths which disprove the paradox.

Also, I am a big fan of the comic! Very funny!

March 28th, 2012, 1:08 pm

Theoretical discussions of physical boundaries? In my comment section?! Unheard of.

March 28th, 2012, 4:44 pm

@Bumbazzle: You made the comic that basically says you are on my side (and the side of half the people here)! Who do you think is right? The truth, and the absolute final word for the Rare Candy Treatment.

March 29th, 2012, 1:53 am

I won't say that either side is right or wrong, but the point of the Ditto strip is that mass is constant, and its volume will be affected accordingly. There is the possible explanation about a change of density, but I believe that be highly impractical in battle. Or he could just have loads of energy stored within him, but his stats surely doesn't reflect that.

March 29th, 2012, 3:02 pm

lol...science :'D

March 30th, 2012, 10:47 pm

Well, Duh!

Ditto takes the air molecules around him and makes them his own. This is highly unlikely, however, but, C'mon... In the Pokemon universe, giant robots can fly.

March 31st, 2012, 1:46 pm

And to think all this time I thought the Ditto joke was a nod to Mini-Dit from the anime :P

April 9th, 2012, 12:22 pm

@Pres1017: Finally, something that makes sense! Take that, Hiramsthoughts!

April 13th, 2012, 11:15 pm

Looks Perfectly awsome

April 13th, 2012, 11:28 pm

@Guest: MiNd BlOwN!!!!!!

April 20th, 2012, 5:55 pm

If Ditto's density and weight are sufficiently high in base form, it could take a wide variety of shapes, discharging excess mass in the form of a big ball of Ditto protoplasm that it merges with when returning to normal.

May 18th, 2012, 5:47 pm

Electrode's face in the last panel is SO cute, and hilarious! :D

May 26th, 2012, 4:58 pm

eathquake the earth power after.......

June 17th, 2012, 6:29 pm

Sucker Punch's direct Japanese translation is "Surprise Attack", or Ambush. No idea why they'd change it to a punching move, though.

June 19th, 2012, 3:16 pm

@TobiasW: Ha! I didn't notice that. Hilarious!

August 18th, 2012, 7:51 pm

Sucker Punch isn't really a punching attack. The Japanese name of the move roughly translates to "Surprise Attack". But Surprise Attack would probably sound lame in English, hence the name "Sucker Punch"

January 10th, 2013, 10:10 pm

February 24th, 2013, 9:35 am

Well,I think Ditto can become bigger to some point...maybe it's hollow in the inside after it transformed?

March 23rd, 2013, 8:30 pm

@Ackirby: Possibly the other two headbutt?
