The Deal

Pay up, or else he'll sleep with the Magikarps. On the floor.

My computer ran out of color this week. Sorry for any inconvenience that may have caused.

The Daycare is a continuous source of inspiration for me, and this strip is no different. People have on numerous occasions suggested to me that the dialogue in the pokemon centers can be taken in many ways besides one, which I feel is an idea which have been processed well enough. The daycare, on the other hand, not as much.

I've been meaning to get this strip done for a long time, almost as long as my Ditto strip, but only now I feel it's polished enough to release into the wild. I've even begun to believe the idea, to an extent. If the debt cannot be paid, the stored pokémon will remain, further increasing the debt. Only one daycare can be found in each region, thus maintaining a monopoly of the service. Species are being bred behind closed doors while the official owners feign ignorance about the spontaneous occurrence of eggs in their premises.

They're a shady bunch. That they are.

Daycare is highway robbery I tell ya! :'D

8I which is why I only use it to level up my Magikarp~

April 18th, 2012, 4:11 pm

hahahahah oh woooow....dark,

April 18th, 2012, 4:26 pm

Kinda reminds me of the time I deposited a low-level Jolteon with a ditto for the purpose of cloning Eevees.

I finally picked him up around 48 levels later and wondered how his mental health was like after I took him back

April 18th, 2012, 4:37 pm

Hahhaha Brilliant!

April 18th, 2012, 5:05 pm

I always did question that old man's morality. <.<

April 18th, 2012, 6:04 pm

Heh, I'd always wondered why they made you pay, AFTER depositing that Pokemon. Oh well, at least he got 19 levels out of that.

Just one thing, though. I'd noticed that you broke the 180 degree rule twice in the first three panels. Pretty minor, but was slightly confusing when reading through the first time. Just something to keep in mind. Nice work, though.

April 18th, 2012, 6:35 pm

hahaha best post by far. this is how i feel every time i have to exchange with these guys

April 18th, 2012, 6:49 pm

The lack of color just makes it better! I love the enforcer in the shadows, keeping thoughts of battle out of young trainers' heads. )8^}D

April 18th, 2012, 7:01 pm

There are two daycares in firered iirc

April 18th, 2012, 7:50 pm

Bro, the black and white totally made it awesome!
Haha, I hate the daycare couple. It's always funny when you name your pokemon "son," so they say, "If you want your son back..."

April 18th, 2012, 8:36 pm

puppy mill

i only use the daycare for breeding

April 18th, 2012, 8:36 pm

Oh man, I remember I did one of the nuzlocke challenges I started... I put a zubat in daycare, and I couldn't get him out because I was poor!!!! Worst day ever ;_;

April 18th, 2012, 10:02 pm

Makes me think of this demotivational poster: http://static.fjcdn.com/pictures/Pokemon_aa3848_2328286.jpg

April 19th, 2012, 8:29 am

No, what they don't get is that I'm using them. I fill up their stockpiles with eggs in my mass breeding frenzies. They should be tired of the sight of so many eggs soon. To the point where it will become torture!!! hehehehehehe

April 19th, 2012, 9:26 am

Top stuff. Love the noire styling and the detail on all of the suits/ jackets. It's always striking the balance of leaving your pokémon in the Daycare long enough to gain some levels, but not too long as to mess up your moveset. Brilliant comic.

April 19th, 2012, 9:39 am

The black/white actually makes it fit, kinda like some 30's gangster flick. Is it weird I was thinking this was involving the mob before the last panel?

April 19th, 2012, 12:10 pm

so true, so true

April 19th, 2012, 2:50 pm

I love this comic! The black and white drawing made you feel like you were in an old private eye film and the dialog was hilarious! I'm looking forward to your next comic!

April 19th, 2012, 4:39 pm

This is the reason for many things.
1.I only use the daycare for breeding.
2.I don't take out my ditto.
3.I name my ditto Sperm Sack. ("If you want your Sperm Sack back...", "Your ______ and Sperm Sack are doing fine.")
4.I NEVER use the day care to level up my pokemon.
5.I always fly/bike to the place when that old man calls me.
And Bumbazzle, the colorlessness makes it great, like an old movie. Another hilarious comments.

The Mixup

I remember when I was about 7 years old,I tried to bread a minin and a plusle... I thought they were the same species, one male, one female. In the end I forgot about them, and I got a level 48, and a level 33 plusle and minin... Funny how things work out.

April 20th, 2012, 6:03 pm

Johto Dacycare

all we need now is strip teasing how the daycare in Johto is on route 34 and mix it up with rule34

April 21st, 2012, 11:39 am

Criminal Activity

Back when i first got Pokemon Diamond I put a level 5 magikarp in the Daycare. I left it in there for 2 whole years with an everstone as a joke. when I went back to get it it was level 45, I had no money at the moment, and i really needed to breed a Manaphy... They charged me over 50,000. :'(

April 21st, 2012, 4:36 pm

I have finally made my way through all your comics.

Needless to say, there is a puddle of urine on the floor, along with a pile of tissue paper filled with tears.

I hope you're happy.

April 21st, 2012, 5:18 pm

Over 50 000, you say?

Wow. That's over 9 000...

April 22nd, 2012, 2:58 am

@Guest: I don't think over 50 000 is possible since your magikarp only gained 40 levels, the amount you payed should have been 100$ + 40 levels = 4100 $

@Rival: Sorry mate, it is under 9000...

April 22nd, 2012, 3:45 pm

@Guest: 50,000? so your magikarp gained (50,000-100=49,900 49,900/100=)499 levels? your feet must be sore.

April 22nd, 2012, 5:45 pm

@Guest: You are such a freakin' hacker.
(100x40+100=50000. I don't think so. 50000-100/100=499. You did not raise your magikarp 499 freakin' levels. And you probably hacked to get that Manaphy. Probably. Hacker.)
@ImtheGuest: Wrong! Check formula above! (I think it's right, but either way, Guest hacks.)

April 22nd, 2012, 8:25 pm

Well, despite the harsh tone, and severity of the situation, they did make that swinub go up about 20 Levels!

April 23rd, 2012, 2:41 am

@Gamining King: Your formula is correct which is the one I also used. 100$ starting fee and then 100$ every level.
Soooo 100$ + 40 x 100$ = 4100$, nuff' said.

April 23rd, 2012, 6:23 pm

@ImtheGuest: Oh. Well now I'm just embarrassed.

April 23rd, 2012, 6:29 pm

@Guest: I just found the formula on bulbapedia. Imtheguest and I were correct. So, Guest. You hacked your game so that you payed way too much money, hacked your game so that you could level that magikarp way up, in which case you are not only a hacker, but a lying hacker, or three, you are just exaggerating. If that is the case, you have caused us much pain.

April 25th, 2012, 3:05 pm

Ummm, what IS the formula? I don't know what everyone is talking about.

April 25th, 2012, 10:34 pm

Haha wow. I never thought of it that way.

April 26th, 2012, 4:09 am

@1ce_k1d: (levels gained x 100)+100
that's the fee you have to pay to regain your pokemon at the daycare

April 26th, 2012, 5:02 pm

@1ce_k1d: 100+(100xlevels)

April 26th, 2012, 5:05 pm

@Bumbazzle: Seriously. Do you have a place where people can post comic ideas? 'Cuz I have 3 great, great, great ones. Well, I guess I'm just putting myself over the top. But I want to give them to you. I know you're thinking I should start my own comic, but I can't draw. ANYTHING!!!

April 27th, 2012, 12:05 pm

@Gamining King: See that Contact button up on top of the page? Press it. It'll be a blast.

Oh whatever I'll just throw the link here too: http://www.rarecandytreatment.com/contact/

Of all the alternatives, my mail would be the most convenient.

April 29th, 2012, 11:11 pm

Evven worse then the fee, i always wondered HOW the pokemon's lvl goes up in there, and why my pokemon comes out learning different moves. i once dreamt i was in there and i HAD to learn to SURVIVE.
p.s. i was an eevee with a cool scarf. lol

April 30th, 2012, 2:36 am

Funny enough, the daycare here seems more evil than it does anywhere else xD

April 30th, 2012, 5:19 am

Just don't do the joke about "We hope to see you again!" it's been done on pokemon X

May 1st, 2012, 8:49 am

Yeah! Alt text! I love when comics have an alt text! Its awesomw for adding small notes!

May 2nd, 2012, 6:06 pm

may I be so bold to ask, but how does a computer run out of col0r (or was that a joke)

May 9th, 2012, 2:33 pm

@Guest: That was a pretty obvious joke :B

June 2nd, 2012, 8:20 pm

They rob me of money, snatching my pokemon, tryna keep em,
so you better hide your mudkips, hide your swinub, and hide your magikarp's.

June 2nd, 2012, 10:01 pm

I think the black and white actually contributed to the dark, serious tone of the comic. If it wasn't on purpose, well, it worked.

June 16th, 2012, 5:40 am

I love you

I was first shown your comics yesterday, and this site has quickly become one of my favorite places on the internet. As someone whose entire life (since age 8) has been surrounded by Pokemon, I commend your comic genius. Do you play on Pokemon Online at all?

June 21st, 2012, 1:20 pm

this reminds me of when my friend traded me a pokemon that I was going to breed, named son, so when I went back to the daycare the lady said "If you want your son back it'll cost you"

July 11th, 2012, 10:01 am

When I was but a Youngster, and played my Pokémon Blue, I had a Bulbasaur. I left it in the daycare, then went off to battle some folks. I returned to find my Bulbasaur had levelled a bit. I didn't have the money, so I sullenly went off to battle some folks. I returned...and they had jacked up the price again. I sold some things, retrieved my Bulbasaur, and never used a daycare again. Oh, the trauma.

July 21st, 2012, 6:52 am

Ah, but...

@Nerdface: One's in Kanto and the other is in the Sevii Islands. And the Kanto-based one only accepts one Pokémon at a time, and goes out of business within three years anyway.
