Sweet nature

After the commercial break, how many licks does it take to faint a Vanilluxe?

There are plenty of weird pokémon. Some weirder than others. It may be easy for us to picture them in battle or being with a trainer, where they'll move, act and behave the way they do. What's harder to imagine, however, is their natural habitat. Particularly if you're a sentient icecream cone which may have the highest amount of predators possible. Obviously, not all pokémon was designed with proper ecology in mind, but just this once, I wanted to visualise how odd it would be to show highly aesthetic species in an environment they're supposed to live in. And, in the same vein, how nature runs its course.

This strip is somewhat different as the emphasis isn't contained within the last panel alone, and I've gotten many mixed responses to this strip already. So if you happen to not appreciate it, then it's my loss, not yours. And even though the strip may imply so, its purpose was not to beat down on Vanilluxe. I'd be happy if the comments could reflect the same.

September 30th, 2012, 2:59 pm

The logical explanation is that they are bred extensively to guarentee an endless supply of icecream.

September 30th, 2012, 3:11 pm

Sadly for me, this is one of those pokemons that I catch just for the pokedex. I'm fairly sure I haven't used it (or its forms) in any battle ever. Mostly because it looks so... well... weird. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

September 30th, 2012, 3:11 pm

This one made me kind of sad...
Those damn Jynxes.

September 30th, 2012, 3:25 pm

I actually used one in Pokemon Black before I lost it. So hard to train, but SOOOOOO worth it!

September 30th, 2012, 4:10 pm

I would love to see one of these for every pokemon. I know that's probably impossible, but it'd be cool.

For some reason it makes me wonder if there are like preservation groups for rare/legendary pokemon.

September 30th, 2012, 4:16 pm

Am I the only one who LIKES Vanillish?

September 30th, 2012, 4:59 pm

@comicboy: It would not be Vanillite then would it?

September 30th, 2012, 5:08 pm

I find it interesting that the only generation with an Ice cream pokemon is the only generation with an ice cream related treat...

This does not bode well for continued sales.

September 30th, 2012, 5:13 pm

@Echo: They seem to come in blueberry (shiny) though...

September 30th, 2012, 5:28 pm

Jesus christ those Jynx looks scary.
I kinda likes this strip, pokemon nature shows would be a cool thing to draw, like following a schyter or pack of sneasel hunting down chansey's or something, you should do some more.

September 30th, 2012, 5:37 pm

You Are Not Alone.

September 30th, 2012, 5:45 pm

I honestly think this will be funnier if the Jynx are replaced with Lickitungs.

September 30th, 2012, 6:02 pm

THIS is why I didn't get Black/White. That pokemon is a freaking ice cream cone. It evolves to a double scoop. It's called Vanillish for gods sake. Vanilla - Vanillish. That's not even trying. That is just turning an object into a pokemon and adding a few letters to the end.

September 30th, 2012, 6:42 pm

No offense, Bumbazzle, but this isn't very funny. A nature documentary? Really? I would find it funny if it were a bunch of four-year-olds, but Jynx? I just don't get it.

September 30th, 2012, 6:48 pm

@HampOoze: How about a pack of wild Gardevoir and Gallade creating a new civilization after destroying humanity?

September 30th, 2012, 7:52 pm

@Megamaxmax: Horsea is just seahorse mixed around. Ekans is just snake backwards. I could go on, but the point is Pokemon names have never been complex.

September 30th, 2012, 7:54 pm

lol, more like be fearful of a pack of PMSing Jynx... In the face of ice cream, they'd be unstoppable!

BTW, I've evolved my Vanilite into a Vanilluxe and it has to be one of my best Pokemon.

September 30th, 2012, 8:05 pm

I dig the nature documentary comic, but I hate those ice cream pokemon! How do they walk? What is their deal? At least the snowflake one has special hover powers. By all rights, these guys should either be awkwardly hopping or...I don't know, carried? They ARE ice cream cones...

September 30th, 2012, 8:42 pm

@Space Butler: Vanillite, Vanillish, and Vanilluxe float (no pun intended), just like Cryogonal, likely with electromagnetism generated by mineral & metal impurities in their otherwise icy composition (this is all pure speculation on my part; Bulbapedia has no explanation of how these three move around).

If the fact that they lack Levitate happens to be what particularly irks you, though, please see: Beedrill, Venomoth, Electrode, etc.

I for one like the Vanillite line. They're by no means my most favorite (that's Lucario! :D ), but they hold a unique charm one can't help but appreciate. IMHO, anyone who outright shuns the ice cream Pokémon either hasn't given them enough consideration or is overly-picky. XD

September 30th, 2012, 8:43 pm

I would like it better if the Lickitung have a migrating course to eat some of those vanillish before the vanillish reach a colder place. Jynx always scared me a bit...

September 30th, 2012, 8:58 pm

Oh, that's why they are so fat!

September 30th, 2012, 9:32 pm

Jynx uses LICK

its super effective!!!!

September 30th, 2012, 10:04 pm

Wow...that IS sweet! XD

September 30th, 2012, 10:07 pm

@Samurott: @rhymes: First off, it's not just one Pokemon. Most of them are a lot like that. Household object, add a few letters. Second, there were a lot more creative pokemon then there are in Black/White. Like Pikachu, Wobbuffet, Mew, Latios. I can go on.

September 30th, 2012, 10:27 pm

Love this! More like this. :)

September 30th, 2012, 10:38 pm

You should make one of Trubish and Garbodor.

September 30th, 2012, 11:21 pm

@Megamaxmax: A living ice cream cone is less creative than a mouse with a lightning bolt motif? It's more ridiculous, sure, that's the point of the comic.

There are quite a few ridiculous Pokemon across all generations. I'm pretty sure that nostalgia is the only reason that the likes of Lickitung and Aipom get off so easy.

October 1st, 2012, 12:33 am

... I'm never eaing a Castelia cone again. Or interacting with Jynx for that matter!

October 1st, 2012, 1:53 am

Voiced by morgan freeman lol

October 1st, 2012, 2:26 am

What will LICKITUNG do?

It's not very tasty...
LICKITUNG was frozen solid!

October 1st, 2012, 5:07 am

I happened to read this in Morgan Freeman's voice.

October 1st, 2012, 8:53 am

I love this strip. It reminded me of March of the Penguins. Good work.

October 1st, 2012, 11:23 am

Let's not forget Seel and Exeggcute here.

October 1st, 2012, 5:34 pm

What about Shuppet and Banette? What if a Shuppet reaches the evo level, but there is there no doll around? And why do all the dolls look the same if people have actually had dolls that look different? (Gen III secret base.) Important questions!!!

October 1st, 2012, 7:10 pm

I love this strip, (and the website). I don't think enough people try to picture pokemon acting like animals in the wild.

October 1st, 2012, 9:02 pm

In response to the question, "How many licks does it take to faint a Vanilluxe?"

Jynx used lick!
Jynx used lick!
Jynx used lick!
Jynx used crunch!
Vanilluxe fainted.
The world may never know.

October 1st, 2012, 9:11 pm

This was one Pokemon that immediately sent me over the edge.

October 1st, 2012, 10:02 pm

I found this strip highly entertaining.

October 1st, 2012, 11:34 pm

I like this one. It's interesting and the expressions and interactions make them kind of endearing for me (then oh shit, Jynx! Nooo! Grandpappy Vanilluxe! *cries*). I wasn't too thrilled with Vanillish and its evolutions for the longest time but I've started to have a better opinion on them and this comic is helping with that! I haven't raised one myself but I might try if they're available in Black and White 2.

October 1st, 2012, 11:47 pm

Comfort Food

The Jinx just found out about the female Mr. Mimes didn't they. It kind-of makes sense to have them since it would be a cold area, and Ice-types love the cold.

The Vanillite line are among my favorites, and this was kind of amusing. Levitating ice cream eaten before its time. The serious tone in which it's presented also adds to it.

October 2nd, 2012, 9:39 am

I really liked this one. It is interesting to think about how some pokemon survive in the wild. I hope you'll do another one of these sometime in the future!

October 2nd, 2012, 3:16 pm

@Guest: never thought of that but seems legit

October 2nd, 2012, 4:51 pm

Sweet Nature indeed. I just lost it at the Jynx trying to eat Vanilluxe.

October 2nd, 2012, 5:18 pm

This is one of my favorite strips in a while! If this webcomic was just all documentary-esque pokemon comics I would be even happier with it than I already am!

October 3rd, 2012, 9:07 am

This made me laugh way too hard. Good strip!

October 3rd, 2012, 2:39 pm

@.:AuraX:.: Vanillish votes SAXON!

October 3rd, 2012, 3:25 pm

Master best pokemon trainer

October 3rd, 2012, 4:14 pm

Very cool idea for a strip! It's quite interesting to see the more abstract ideas realised in a more natural fashion. Good job.

October 4th, 2012, 3:44 am

@Megamaxmax: OK well look at Grimer (which is Litterally a pile of shit) it's one letter away from grime. And Muk is just a bigger version of Grimer so where's the creativity there.

Need another Gen 1 example, OK how about the fact that the Machop line (one of my personal favorites) is Litterally 4 steps (5 in the case of Machamp) away from being normal humans.

Hitmonchan is a boxer, Voltorb and Electrode are balls, Rattata Raticate and Pikachu are rats, Gastly is a stereotypical ghost, Ekans is Snake backwards, Zubat is a bat the list goes on and on.

Hell I think the only lines of Pokemon from gen 1 that isn't a starter line that isn't so plain it's annoying are the Eevee and Nidoran line. Eevee because it was the only split evolution line in Gen 1 and Nidoran because it honestly looks like something that you wouldn't see in the real world but isn't ugly as hell like the Koffing lone, and before you bitch at me I've been playing since Gen 1 when I was 5, but unlike you I don't let my nostalgia get in the way of liking the newer games.

October 4th, 2012, 4:21 pm

@TheSilverLeague: The voice in my head while reading this was Morgan Freeman... I didn't notice until panel 3.

October 4th, 2012, 4:28 pm

I might consider doing a in-the-wild documentary comic xD that would be so awesome, plus i do it all the time...in my head.
But i don't know if I have any time to make another comic... this would be a lot simpler though, so i MIGHT.... would anyone want me too?

October 5th, 2012, 12:29 am

I just LOVE how this strip looks like a.....National Geographic show? Somehow I can't remember the exact channel despite watching a lot of their animal documentary shows XD

October 5th, 2012, 8:41 pm

I actually like Vanillish, now, thanks to this comic. I'm going to grab one on BW2 and make it part of my party. I need to say sorry for not catching it in BW1.

October 6th, 2012, 10:51 am

you all commenting are crazy, I find this strip funny. As for the argument on object pokemon there are many many pokemon in almost every generation that has this. Granted Im not to big on them in the first place. My main thing about gen five is the new evolutions where they evolved a pokemon like Magmar which was a total powerhouse pokemon in my mind and made it even more powerhousing and even the designs aren't very good. Also the story line didnt catch my interest at all when I played it but that's my own opinion.

If you want to see ridiculous pokemon go look at the list of 'pokemon' in B/W 2's Pokestar Studios |D

October 7th, 2012, 2:33 pm

Why is everyone saying Morgan Freeman and not David Attenborough?

October 8th, 2012, 10:01 am

Well I guess this might explain why Vanilluxe can learn Mirror Shot/Flash Cannon. Evolution at its finest, no?

October 8th, 2012, 11:48 pm

@Megamaxmax: Gen 1 had Muk, a pile of sludge with a face. It also had Magnemite which are magnets. People over look the good gen 5 pokemon like Hydreigon, Galvantual, Braviary,Carracosta, Seismatoad. The list goes on

October 9th, 2012, 6:29 pm

@NishaBird: You mean Generation IV (DPPt), which had a good dozen or so new evolutions tacked on at the end of the Pokedex for no real reason. B/W didn't introduce any Pokemon related to earlier Pokemon at all. Also, Pokestar Studios opponents are not, and have never been presented as, actual Pokemon, so it baffles me that you present them as ridiculous Pokemon designs.

October 10th, 2012, 10:29 am

I totally got what you were going for. I liked this strip, honestly. It didn't seem like it was bashing anything. I actually wound up reading it in Morgan Freeman's voice.

October 10th, 2012, 4:12 pm

@Grubmiller: Thank you! Thank you for stating the obviousness of the facts that you are stating that no one else seems to be figuring out on their own. BTW interesting story about Hydreigon: The first Dieno I ever saw was shiny, and I caught it. It is a Hydreigon now. My only regret is that it is female. But that doesn't matter. No offense to the ladies out there, but male pokemon have higher attack IVs then female. Okay, IVs are going too far. So is nature. Even if it does make the tiniest difference. Wait, that means it does matter.

October 10th, 2012, 9:51 pm

@Gamining King: The games haven't determined genders by the Attack IV since the IV/EV overhaul in Gen. 3.

In other words, your Hydreigon is not female because of a poor Attack IV, it's female because the RNG gave you a female.

October 11th, 2012, 5:13 pm

@Gamining King: I don't know what's worse; that you still think gender depends on IVs, or that you're trying to optimize a Hydreigon for physical attack.

October 11th, 2012, 5:41 pm

@Guest: Well I'm sorry for not spending all of my time studying this sort of crap all of the time, and I'm sorry for the fact that I haven't played my White in 1 1/2 years because it got too boring because my team wasn't challenged by anything and all of the specail event 'mons would be gone forever if I deleted my file. Also, I'm sorry for the fact that you would make a little boy feel bad about himself.

October 12th, 2012, 11:45 am

I read this in David Attenborough's voice. was not disappointed.

October 12th, 2012, 3:40 pm

any one see what peta posted about pokemon? read if you can but warning it is disturbing and may cause some people to get very angry. by the way it is called pokemon black and blue and caveman films did a thing on it.

October 13th, 2012, 6:15 pm

@Guest: And where would I find this? Seriously, I want to know. Also, can anyone find me PETA's email in case I do think this will send me on a "murdoues rampage agesist PETA".

October 14th, 2012, 5:37 am

And so ends another episode of "Mutual of Johto's Pokemon Kingdom." Join us next time when we look at the Charizards of the Great Desert in Hoenn, and how they hunt the migrating Tauros.

October 14th, 2012, 10:31 am

@Anon: Ohhh right D/P did those, Never played that gen to be honest. And perhaps not but you battle them all the same, I just find it extremely odd that they did that. But anywho, Gen 5 (along with Gen 4) don't really interest me anyway, not to many pokemon I care to get (theres only a few), B/W story line isnt that encapturing (Gen 3's being the most encapturing to me), and just other reasons I don't really care for those two games |D

October 19th, 2012, 5:58 pm

hey can you make one about lavender town? like anything about it

October 19th, 2012, 10:07 pm

It occurs to me that Vanililsh/uxe have a decent camouflage mechanism; if they can drive their "cone" into the ground/snow their "ice cream" portion blends in with the snowy climate.

October 20th, 2012, 2:07 am

Personally, I think that they should be attacked by Lickitungs, what with them being icecreams and everything

October 20th, 2012, 12:28 pm

You know, something I've always found odd about Vanilluxe is that it can (and almost always does) know Acid Armor. Now think about it, would you really want to eat something that just covered it self in poisonous acid? I've always seen it as a method to keep itself from being eaten.

October 20th, 2012, 5:50 pm

@Joltik: Uhhh, I don't know how to say this, but they have Ice body, not Acid armor. You must have a hacked version. Even the hidden ability isn't acid armor. And to all, are you forgetting vanillite? You can't have a yogurt cup directly to a double-sunday-whatever.

October 20th, 2012, 6:24 pm

@Megamaxmax: Yes. Gen 1 had Seel, who was a seal, Voltorb, who was a ball, and Lickitung, who licked you with his tongue.

October 21st, 2012, 11:57 am

@Gamining King: Acid Armor is a move, not an ability.

October 22nd, 2012, 10:31 am

@Hurf Durfington: I can't find the words to tell you how brilliant that interpretation is.

October 24th, 2012, 9:45 am

@Megamaxmax: I agree with you. I'll admit that the original series had a few points where they weren't trying (Ekans being "Snake" and Arbok being "Kobra" backwards are classics), but they were at least understandable for actual pokemon. An ice cream cone, a ghostly chandelier, And I had no idea what Oshawott was until somebody explained it to me (ugly as sin is what it is). It feels like they're running out of ideas, but at 649 pokemon, that's to be expected.

October 25th, 2012, 3:57 pm

I've been waiting forever, it's almost HALLOWEEN, why aren't you updating? :( PLEASE make new ones?

October 27th, 2012, 7:16 pm

@Gamining King: Acid armor is not an ability, genius. It's a move that Vanilluxe learns BY LEVEL UP.

October 29th, 2012, 1:35 am

@Y UNO UPDATE: He's doing this for free. He isn't obligated to update.

November 12th, 2012, 1:07 pm

I quite like this one, probably because I enjoy documentaries. It would be awesome to see the whole Pokedex put into comic strips like this. :D

November 12th, 2012, 2:38 pm

@luu: You're missing out on the best Ice-type in the game, then.

November 21st, 2012, 3:35 pm

@luu: I used it in White. So did many other people I know.

December 24th, 2012, 2:03 pm

On the contrary to the comic's intent, I really like monster-behaving Jynx. Humanoid icy ghouls, luring their unaware victims.

February 3rd, 2013, 6:05 pm

February 22nd, 2013, 12:26 am

@Megamaxmax: THIS is why I didn't get Red/Blue. That pokemon is a freaking pile of sludge. It evolves to a bigger pile of sludge. It's called Grimer for gods sake. Grime - Grimer. That's not even trying. That is just turning an object into a pokemon and adding a few letters to the end.

March 5th, 2013, 9:22 pm

LOL I always wondered what pokemon would look like in their natural habitats.
Also that icecream pokemon's design SUCKS ASS

March 24th, 2013, 5:09 am

I've never understood why so many people treat these Pokémon as just living ice cream cones. It should be quite obvious with even a brief look that they're made up of snow and ice that happen to be shaped like ice cream cones. Nobody assumes Regice is just a living popsicle, do they?

April 7th, 2013, 1:56 pm

According to a Japanese comic (forgot the name) the cream is snow while their heads are spherical shaped made of ice like Regice.

May 6th, 2013, 10:24 pm

I cant be the only one who read this in Morgan Freemans voice.
